Island #8 – “I will yield myself to God to be used to bring thus good news to others, both by my example and by my words.”
If you went out to dinner tonight and had the best meal of your life and the best service of your life, all at a very reasonable price, would you tell anyone?
“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'” (Matthew 28:18-20)
As followers of Jesus, we are commissioned to do what? Go and make disciples of all nations.
How are we to understand “all nations”? Everyone, everywhere.
This Island is all about your oikos. This word is pronounced oy-kos. It is Greek for “household”. Your household is made up of the people you consider your family. These are the people who are in your sphere of influence. Your household isn’t limited to whoever lives in your house or who is in your family by bloodline or marriage. Your household is made up of the people who love you and are involved in your life in a much more intimate way then just someone who knows you.
How many people are in your sphere of influence? 8 to 15 typically. Introverts might have less and extroverts might have more, but this is the average number of people that you have in your oikos.
How are we to understand “all nations”? No one person can reach the world, but everyone can reach their oikos. The hard work of relationship building is already done. Now all you have to do is insert what you have learned on your journey and voila you are making disciples. If everyone who is a follower of Jesus did this then we would make disciples of all nations – one oikos at a time.
