The Desire To Be Known

Why do we put things out into the world?  Why do we write books?  Why do we sing songs or play the piano or paint a picture or post on social media?  Why do we drive loud, flashy cars, quiet, elegant cars or even big pick-up trucks?  Why do we tattoo our bodies?  Why do we color and style our hair?  Why do we wear colorful clothes that are too revealing or dark clothes that cover everything up?  What is it about us human beings that we have a need to share ourselves through outward expressions of individuality or even conformity, with the world?

Why do we have a need to put who we are, what we value, what we long for, what hole we are trying to fill, what group we belong to, what perceived strength we are trying to highlight or what perceived weakness we are trying to cover up, out there for the world to see, hear, feel and experience?  Each of us has a longing to express ourselves through the arts, fashion, body art, hair styles, piercings, automobiles, addresses and anything else that allows us to publicly reveal who we are or who we desire to be.  This is an essential part of what it means to be human.

You don’t see squirrels expressing their individuality or forming groups with specific styles or agendas that they are broadcasting to anyone and everyone who is paying attention.  When you see a squirrel in Florida it looks and acts just like a squirrel in Pennsylvania.  When you see a squirrel from the wrong side of the tracks, it looks and acts just like a squirrel from the right side of the tracks.  No squirrel gangs.  No squirrel political parties.  No squirrel fashion statements.  No squirrel musicians or artists or bloggers.  This putting ourselves out there for the world to see and react to is a divinely human trait.

We have a desire for people to see us, to hear us and to accept us.  We have a desire for people to acknowledge our existence and to understand how we experience the world.  We want people to see what we see, to hear what we hear and to feel what we feel.  We want to be known and sometimes we are willing to settle for being known in a negative way as opposed to being totally unknown.  Sometimes we will put a version of ourselves out there that isn’t quite true, simply to get a reaction, simply to be known.  For, there is something in us humans, that drives us to be known for something, anything.  For being known for something is far better than being totally unknown.

We can boil our beginning question down to this: We put things out into the world because we want to be known.  Not known like famous, but known like the people in our lives, the people in our spheres of influence, know who we are.   They know that we exist and that we are unique individuals.  This makes us human, not squirrel-like, because we are created in the image of God.  All God has ever desired was and is to be known by his creation.  God wants his creation to know him and that is why he has put himself out into the world.  For, just like you, God understands that it is better to be known than it is to be unknown.  Our need to put things out into the world, is us living into the image of God.  Our desire to be known is us living into the image of God.

I write this blog because I am created in the image of God.  I dress the way that I dress because I am created in the image of God.  I post on Facebook and YouTube because I am created in the image of God.  I sing because I am created in the image of God.  Since I am created in the image of God, I put myself out there into the world for people to see, to hear, to read and to experience.  I do this because I want to be known.  I want to be known because I am created in the image of God.  (Insert yourself into this last paragraph and write it anyway that you want.  Just never forget that you put things out into this world because you are created in the image of God.)
